Explained: The newly formed Jal Shakti Ministry

As promised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his election rally in Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu on April 13, The Narendra Modi Government 2.0 has formed new ministry called Jal Shakti Ministry. The main priority of this ministry will be to provide clean drinking water to each and every part of our country. The Jal Shakti Ministry is formed by merging Ministry of Drinking water and Sanitation with Ministry of water resources, river water and Ganga rejuvenation.

The main function to be carried out by Jal Shakti Ministry are solving international and inter states water disputes, Namami Ganga project, interlinking Indian rivers and to provide clean drinking water in each and every part of country. The Modi 2.0 Government has also set target to provide piped drinking water to every household by 2024. The Jal Shakti Ministry will be headed by Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Rattan Lal Kataria became Minister of State in Jal Shakti Ministry.

After taking the charge of Ministry Gajendra Singh Shekhawat told media that ‘All the water related works will be merged under Jal Shakti Ministry. Further he added that the main priority of Jal Shakti Ministry is to provide clean drinking water in each and every part of country. Gajendra Singh Shekhawat told media that under Namami Gange project, The Ganga river has been cleaned to large extent and now ministry will work on cleaning its tributaries and Sub tributaries.

The Challenges of Jal Shakti Ministry:

  • To provide irrigation water facilities to farmers so that their income can increase.
  • According to recent report by NITI Aayog 21 major Indian cities will run out of ground water by 2020.
  • To tackle country’s water demand as the country’s water demand will be double by 2030.
  • To provide piped water to rural households.
